A woods full of Viking silver

Sysmä, Finland. about 1000 to 1050 AD. Last 1,000 years. Known. Free

Known. A metal detectorist found a very large Viking Age silver hoard in the woods.

The silver was buried near the church village of Sysmä, in Finland, about 150 kilometres north of Helsinki. Officials date the coins and ornaments to about 1000 to 1050 AD. The silver sat in two birch-bark containers among stones, about 12 metres apart. It weighs about 4.5 kilograms. There are many coins, a silver bracelet, a fitting, a silver bead, and cut pieces of silver. Some coins come from lands that are now Germany, Sweden, and Britain, and some are Islamic dirhams. No graves were found with the silver.

The page says it is still unknown whether both containers were buried at the same moment.
