A girl's gold and makeup, still in her tomb

Tauric Chersonesos. nearly 2,000 years ago. Greece and Rome. Known. Free

Known. A carved stone names Annion, and gold jewellery and makeup were placed in her tomb.

The tomb is in the burial ground outside Tauric Chersonesos, the old Greek city on the Black Sea. The main grave structures date to the late 1st century and the 2nd century AD, nearly 2,000 years ago. The stone says Annion, daughter of Aischines, died at the age of eighteen. A study of the bones suggests a woman of about twenty. The tomb held gold jewellery, makeup boxes with traces of rouge, hairpins, spindles, and beads. Her name is also painted on a red-glaze bowl.

The page says the stone and the bones do not give the same age, and it warns against assuming a man named Ariston was buried with her.
