Not every piece was shown to be a gold tongue.
Debated. A scholar says one object looks like an ear of wheat.
The tombs are at Marina el-Alamein, about 60 miles west of Alexandria, in Egypt. They date to the Ptolemaic or Roman period, from 323 BC to 395 AD. The team found 18 tombs. Eleven were cut deep into the ground, and seven lay nearer the surface. They report 24 objects called gold tongues, likely placed in the mouths of mummies. One granite coffin is 8.2 feet long, and its lid was still on. There is also an unfinished marble statue of Aphrodite, and an offering altar whose base looks like a false door.
Experts do not agree that the altar base is a false door. One says it may be unfinished. Another says it may show the sign for an offering.
