A burnt scroll a computer could read

Herculaneum. 79 AD. Greece and Rome. Known. Free

Known. A computer read a scroll that fire had turned to carbon.

The scroll comes from Herculaneum. Mount Vesuvius buried it in 79 AD. Scans and a computer opened one scroll, called PHerc. 1667, into about 1.5 metres of writing across 20 columns. The text is about ethics, how people act, impulse, and practical wisdom. The handwriting may date to the 2nd or late 3rd century BC. A second scroll, PHerc 139, now shows a title: Philodemus, On the Gods, Book 8. Before this, mainly Book 1 of that work was known. Philodemus of Gadara lived from about 110 BC into the 30s BC.

The page says a link in the first scroll to the thinker Aristocreon is not yet sure.
