Debated. An upright sword may have been offered on purpose, but that is not proved.
The sword was found in a forest near Gdańsk, Poland, in the Gdańsk Forest District. It dates to about 2,700 years ago, between 900 and 700 BC. It stood upright in fine sand. It is about 60 centimetres long. It is a bronze sword with a narrow tang. A grip of wood, bone, or antler once covered the tang, and that grip has decayed. Grooves, arcs, and short lines decorate the blade. No other objects were found with it. The page says a sword like this could have been worth a whole herd of cattle.
The page says a chance loss is unlikely. It only points to the possibility of a ritual.
