A lady buried with frankincense

Colchester, England. late Roman period. Greece and Rome. Known. Free

Known. Frankincense was found in her coffin.

She was buried in Colchester, England, in the late Roman period. The Roman city was Camulodunum. She was in her late twenties or thirties. Her lead coffin has shell and circle patterns. Jet hairpins and rare glass flasks were placed with her. Tests found frankincense and liquid gypsum in the coffin. One glass vessel held resins brought from outside Britain.

The tests only suggest she may have grown up in Colchester.
