Gold under a fallen tree

Sandnes, Norway. about 1,500 years old. Greece and Rome. Known. Free

Known. A gold sword fitting was found under a fallen tree.

It was at Dalsnuten, near Sandnes, in south-west Norway. It is about 1,500 years old, from the first half of the 6th century. The piece is about 6 centimetres wide and weighs 33 grams. Gold thread still shows, and two animal figures face each other. It is one of only 17 such finds in northern Europe, and the first in Rogaland. It is worn from use.

One expert believes it was buried as an offering. The page does not prove that.
