Did they find the lost city of Magas?

Mayrtup, Chechnya. medieval. Last 1,000 years. Debated. Free

The lost city of Magas has not been proved.

Debated. Diggers say a huge fortified town at Mayrtup fits the old accounts best.

The site is the Mayrtup burial ground, in Chechnya, Russia. It covers 350 hectares. The page calls it the largest known medieval settlement in the North Caucasus. Arab writers of the 9th to 11th centuries named Magas as the capital of Alania. In the sixth century the place was an Alan burial ground, and a large settlement grew later. The page says the city's end is ascribed to the Mongol leader Batu Khan in 1239.

Historians have long argued where Magas stood, and this site is not yet confirmed.
